He stood quietly and walked to the front of the room. As he took his place the chatter that had filled the space grew still. Heads turned. Expectant expressions came across the faces of the people in the room. When he spoke the words were simple, yet they seemed to pierce the heart.

Romans 12:2 (CEB)
Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing and mature.

It seems our world today wants to demand that people change their minds. “If I yell enough, argue enough, call people names, perhaps someone will change their minds and live the way I think they should.” Yet my mind continues to wander back to that evening, when a group of people gathered in a room to talk about their calling as a church. I began to wonder what it would look like if we truly lived our beliefs and intentionally started a journey of inner spiritual transformation.

I am inviting all of the churches, all of the people to join me on a journey during the next year. I am inviting all of us to read through the devotional book, We Make the Road by Walkingby Brian McLaren. It is a simple devotional book. 52 chapters. Here is the plan:

  • One Chapter per week. (3-4 pages)
  • Look up the Bible references at the beginning of each chapter and read them.
  • Gather with another person or group of people to share responses to the discussion questions listed at the end of each chapter.

I wonder what will happen if the entire East District goes on a walk together. Will it feel like a caravan walking from where we are today to a place where new life is promised? Will spiritual renewal really happen? Will it transform us – me – our churches – our ministries – our communities?

There is something inside my heart that wants to challenge the status quo and see exactly what will happen as we all, together, begin a journey of spiritual renewal. It’s time. It’s just time. Our society longs for a fresh outpouring of compassion and love. Let’s go on this journey as the East District in its entirety.

If you want to walk with me on this journey of spiritual renewal I have a few suggestions:

  • Let us begin reading on the first Sunday in Advent – December 2, 2018. Advent marks the beginning of the year for the followers of Christ.
  • Let us begin our reading with Chapter 14. This is where the advent readings are found.

I want to walk with you. Will you walk with me?

I hope to see you on the road.
