Remember the movie — Pay it Forward? I like that movie and the idea behind it (or in front of it). But I have been thinking about Praying it Forward. Now, that is a neat idea and way of life.
Prayers are often about things that have happened and asking the Lord to fix them, heal them, save us from them. But what about a prayer which asks of the Lord, “what are you up to today, Lord? I want to be a part of it!” This is a forward looking prayer…putting aside the issues of yesterday or even the moment and seeking what the Spirit is up-to and moving in-to.
We the people of the United Methodist Church seek to be faithful to God’s particular call for us as disciples of Jesus Christ. We have a strong heritage. Now, there is a future filled with great potential as we seek Christ and the power of the love he calls us to be united in.
A Prayer Forward …
O Lord God, you have faithfully been present in the lives of we, your children, since you first breathed life into us. Though we stray and do not make wise or right decisions, you continue to be present and redirect our steps forward. You even take the chaos we have created and make order and goodness. You have for us a new vision, a new day, and new plan for a future. When we cannot see or agree on the way forward, we know that you do. But we also know that as we misstep, you forgive and redirect. May we have the courage to take even a single step forward and trust that you will then reveal the next step and then the next as we move into the fullness of the vision and hope only you can fully see for us, your creation, your children. Amen and Amen.
