Reaching new people

Lent and Easter are an opportunity to connect with people who may come to our churches only this time of year. Below are some of the “best practices” from churches around the country.

  • For a Lenten discipline, ask every board, committee and group in the church to meet outside th church building for the six weeks of Lent. One church then had all members wear a purple ribbon as a conversation starter when in the neighborhood.
  • Pick out one community need and do an outreach project for the Lenten season. Invite others to join you.
  • One church, instead of a Maundy Thursday service in their church, hosted a dinner at the community center and thanked all the town workers for their service.
  • A church offered a one-day VBS on Good Friday, as many students were out of school but their parents had to work.
  • Many church members donate plants around Easter time. Have each person then deliver a plant to someone in town and thank them for their service.
  • If your church has not had a tradition of a Good Friday service or it has been poorly attended – consider inviting people to go on a prayer walk with you and pray for the community, or set up a labyrinth in a public place.
  • Hold an Easter Egg hunt in a park and see how many more people join in. Many churches double or triple participation.
  • Celebrate Easter Sunrise Service in a public place and ask your members to invite, pick up, and bring guests. Have refreshments at the service (rather than breakfast back at the church which only members go to) and people will linger and talk.
  • Deliver complete Easter dinners to people who had to work on Easter morning (hotel, gas station, police, health care, etc.)
  • Don’t forget to take pictures/videos of all you do and show them to the church.
  • For all worship and activities, make sure you have outstanding guest hospitality services, as this may be your one opportunity to greet people.
  • Look to see what spring time events are happening in your community and connect with them (Little League Baseball season, town spring fairs, school vacation times, etc.)
