We in the DSW Christian Unity and Inter-religious Relationships Commission are praying for all who are suffering because of Hurricane Harvey. We lament climate change’s magnification of dangerous extreme weather events. May we protect, restore, and rightly share God’s creation — including and especially the life-sustaining climate God has given us. If you are considering how to help with disaster relief efforts, we encourage supporting our United Methodist Committee of Relief (UMCOR).

As you may know, Thursday, September 1 is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, an observance started by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, recently adopted by the Roman Catholic Church, and growing in popularity among many of our United Methodist Ecumenical partners. We invite you to visit the World Methodist Council or Creation Justice Ministries website to find tools to observe this day of prayer as well as to celebrate the entire Season of Creation, which runs from September 1 through October 4 (the date on which many Christians observe the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.)

Read the official United Methodist Church resolution on climate change: “Caring for Creation: A Call to Stewardship and Justice” from the  2016 Book of Resolutions, #1033.If you are on social media, please spread the word about the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.
