Churches from the Canyon, River, and Southern Nevada Clusters joined with North District United Methodist Women (UMW) in collecting hygiene kits, cleaning buckets and money to contribute to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) October 14th during the North District UMW annual celebration held at Journey UMC.
Donations collected at the event:
89 Cleaning Buckets valued at $65 each, totaling $5,785.00
26 Hygiene Kits valued at $12 each, totaling $312.00
11 Sewing Kits valued at $28 each, totaling $308.00
Individual kit supplies estimated value $66.00
Monetary Donations $2032.94
Rev. Brian Diggs, Associate Director of UMCOR West in Salt Lake City, Utah and keynote speaker for the event, spoke in depth about the history of UMCOR and the organization’s ties to the United Methodist Women. He presented information how UMCOR’s mission is funded through UMCOR Sunday donations as well as other donations received throughout the year. He also explained how relief kits are distributed to those in need throughout the nation and overseas.
Rev. Diggs is responsible for the overall operations of UMCOR West including the scheduling of volunteers, general office/administration responsibilities, and securing the materials needed for volunteer work teams. He says of his work, “Working with United Methodists from across the country has deepened my understanding of the mission of the Church. The commitment our volunteers have has had a lasting effect on why I continue to enjoy my work at UMCOR West. Our disaster response kits are sent all over the world but I suspect the relief begins right here in Salt Lake City when our volunteer teams experience the healing presence of the Holy Spirit with each kit they build.”
After communion, led by both Rev. Robyne Mayer of Journey United Methodist Church (UMC) and Rev. Brian Diggs, a special blessing ceremony was administered by Rev. Diggs. All attendees gathered around all the gifts placed at the altar for laying of hands on the gifts or the shoulders of someone touching the gifts, then a pallet prayer was conducted blessing all the items presented.
Thank you to all the United Methodist Women and their respective churches and members that supported this event. Thank you also to the Home Depot stores on Craig Road and Dorrell Drive in North Las Vegas, Nevada who supplied Journey UMC with the orange buckets that were filled by members of the Journey congregation. Special thanks to Flagstaff Federated Community Church, Global Community UMF, Hope UMC, Journey UMC, St. Johns UMC, and University UMC for their donation of cleaning buckets, hygiene kits, kit supplies and/or monetary donations. Also, thank you to DaySpring UMC in Tempe, AZ for the church’s sewing kit donation. You are all true examples of God’s people living boldly in the community through faith and action.
