Frequently Asked Questions Regarding General and Jurisdictional Conference

When and where will General Conference and Western Jurisdictional Conference take place?

  • 2020 General Conference of The United Methodist Church will be held from May 5-15, 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • 2020 Western Jurisdictional Conference will be July 15-18, 2020 in Montana, exact location to be determined.

How many people does the Desert Southwest Conference Elect?

We elect one clergy delegate and one lay delegate in addition to one reserve clergy delegate and one reserve lay delegate to General Conference, who will also serve as delegates to Jurisdictional Conference.

Then, we will elect an additional 3 clergy delegates and 3 lay delegates to Jurisdictional Conference, who will also serve—by order of election—as additional reserve delegates to General Conference. Additional clergy and lay reserve delegates may be elected if a motion to do so is made and passed at the Annual Conference. (Discipline, ¶34)

What is the time commitment?

All members of the General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference delegation are part of the General Conference reading and preparation team. The commitment, expectation, and responsibility are exactly the same for laity and clergy who serve on the delegation. There will be preparation work from the time you are elected in June of 2018-December of 2019. From January 2020 through May 4th of 2020 plan to spend about 7 hours a week reading legislation and preparing with the team for General Conference. There will be face to face meetings with the full delegation as well as regular conference calls. For first elects, there will be additional planning meetings and pre-General Conference meetings. The term of service as a General Conference delegate is four years and while it is rare that there are additional responsibilities after 2020, it does happen.

The first elects and first reserves will attend General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference in 2020 and will serve the quadrennium on Jurisdictional committees. The clergy and laity elected third fourth and fifth will attend Jurisdictional Conference in July of 2020 and may be elected to serve the quadrennium on Jurisdictional committees.

Can I be elected to General Conference and plan not to attend Jurisdictional Conference?

No, due to the connectional nature of this work the responsibility of attending General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference is part of being elected first or second.

I would like to be elected for Jurisdictional Conference only, is that possible?

Yes, please indicate that on your nomination form, but remember everyone elected as part of the Desert Southwest Delegation shall be part of the reading and preparation team for General Conference.

Who is eligible?
