In Memory of Mrs. Phyllis Stressman

by | Aug 17, 2018 | Death Announcements

With sadness, we share the news that Phyllis Stressman, wife of Rev. Roger Stressman, died on July 1, 2018.

Phyllis was born in Topeka, KS but lived in Tempe, AZ for most of her life. She and her sisters were raised in a devout family setting by her parents. The Christian-principled home was the cornerstone of her own family. Love and concern for each other was the daily lesson in life. That it succeeded so well is clearly evidenced through the family she was so instrumental in guiding and encouraging. Her love for God was her beacon of light. As with everyone, life had its setbacks. With guidance from her Savior she won every battle. Phyllis smiled to the end. Those she loved the most, Roger and the children, provided constant, gentle attention during her illness. Phyllis passed a happy, loving person. Her strength became ours. We all share the same conviction: our time together will be resumed. She is survived by her husband, Roger Stressman, three children and three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Rev. Roger Stressman is a retired elder in the Desert Southwest Conference. He attended North Central College and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1947 and his ministry included service in the Michigan Evangelical-United Bretheren Conference: Saginaw; St. Joseph: First UMC; Royalton: Grace UMC; Ionia: Zion UMC; Detroit: Calvary UMC; in the Southern California-Arizona Conferences: Tucson: Catalina UMC; Scottsdale: Los Arcos UMC; in the Pacific-Southwest Conference: Phoenix: Epworth UMC; Sun City: Willowbrook UMC; and in the Desert-Southwest Conference, Rev. Stressman served as the North District Superintendent prior to his retirement in 1990. While in retirement, he served Mesa: Velda Rose UMC; as the chaplain of a cruise line; and as the chaplain of the Tempe Police Department.
