WASHINGTON, DC – The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church is mourning the death of the 41st U.S. President, George H. W. Bush.

President Bush is the father of 43rd President George W. Bush, who and his wife, Laura, are staunch United Methodists.

The 41st President died November 30 at his home in Houston. He was 94. His death came less than eight months after that of his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush.

In a letter sent to the President George W. Bush, COB President Bishop Ken Carter said the UMC bishops were praying that God’s sustaining grace and strength will surround the entire Bush family in the days to come.

“Please know that we join you in grieving this loss. Yet we do not grieve as those who have no hope. We trust in Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life, and who goes to prepare a place for us,” part of the letter said.

The full letter sent to the Bush family can be read at this link.
