Zion UMC after the 2017 fire

by Rev. Dan Morley

Sunday, January 6, Zion United Methodist Church voted to hire a contracting firm and begin construction on the rebuilding of their sanctuary.

Since the fire on June 6, 2017, which destroyed the Zion UMC sanctuary and offices, the congregation has worshiped  at Nevada Partners on Lake Mead. Before Thanksgiving, they were able to locate to the multi-purpose space on their Revere property, which became available after the congregation leasing their space completed their contract with Zion.

The leadership and membership of Zion has focused on the resurrection of the life and ministry of Zion United Methodist Church. They have achieved several milestones  through these months — paying off the $500,000+ loan, returning to 100% apportionment giving (in recent years they were only able to satisfy about 25%), and creating a plan to rebuild the sanctuary without indebtedness.

Pastor Linda Stanley reflects upon the journey — “In the last 18 months from the day of the fire, June 5, 2017 until the end of the year, December 31, 2018, Zion has been going through a preparation season to birth the restored renovated building.  In 2019, Zion is expectant of the finished work ahead of us. Pregnancy has many looks, birthing anything can be just so messy, but expectantly Zion is looking to the higher calling, keeping our focus on God knowing that we can trust God with all our hearts no matter what it looks like, and as we lean not on our own understanding God does strengthen our hearts. So, in all our ways, we acknowledge Him, knowing He will consistently direct our paths as we trust Him, because God doesn’t give up on us.”

Proverbs 3:5 & 6 has been their focus in this season of their ministry — Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.
