Jesus shows us an alternative

Footsteps in the Sand

In his book, Strength to Love, Martin Luther King, Jr wrote — “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

In these times in the life of our world, our country, and our church, I reflect upon where I stand and how I stand. These are challenging times and how we respond is a reflection of character and faith within one’s soul. During this season of our journey as God’s people, may those who reflect back upon these times, in ages to come, see in us a measure of Christ.

A scripture passage this Lenten season which gives us guidance from Christ on how to respond in the midst of challenge and controversy is Luke 13:31.

And they said to Jesus — “Run for your Life! Herod’s on the hunt for you. He’s out to kill you!”

When being confronted, a common response is either fight, flight or freeze. Jesus does none of these, but instead he keeps his focus on his calling and mission. He does not give his attention or passion to anyone or anything which is attempting to divert him from his mission.

At this time in the life of our church and nation, we are often tempted to be reactionary — to either run away, fight, or be silent. Jesus shows us an alternative. To anything which attempts to derail him, he lets it be known that he has a ministry to engage in. He continues on his mission of clearing out the demons and healing the sick (Luke 13:32), his mission of raising all persons to a new life.

Jesus has his vision set for the complete expression of unconditional, sacrificial, and life-giving love, which is lived out through the cross and fulfilled in Resurrection.

How are you staying true to the mission to which Christ calls you? Just as we count our many blessings, let us count the ways of ministry and mission in which we are engaged. Let us tell the stories of lives touched by the love of Christ in being the champion for all persons.

Here is one of those stories — a North District Loaves and Fishes story by Nikki Smith titled “God’s grace and provision — CLICK HERE.
