Trinity Opportunity Alliance is working to bring light to those who have aged out of foster care for National Foster Care Month.

Scottdale, AZ— In recognition of National Foster Care Month, Trinity Opportunity Alliance (TOA), a non-profit organization focused on connecting foster youth with employment, wants to share stories of those who have aged out of foster care.

In 1988, President Reagan called for May to be recognized as National Foster Care Month.  At that time of his declaration, the focus of National Foster Care Month was to recognize foster parents, but the reality of foster care has since changed.

Currently there are over 400,000 youth in foster care in the United States. Every year, 20,000 of those youth “emancipate” or age out of care.  In Arizona, statistics show 61 percent of foster youth over the age of 14 will age out alone without ever finding permanence through adoption, guardianship or reunification. Many of those youth age out without a high school diploma or with any employment experience. Only half of young people who age out of the foster care system will have sustainable employment by the age of 24.

This May, TOA wants to recognize and honor young people who have aged out of the foster care system by collecting and publishing their stories. TOA would like to share the stories of their transition from foster care to adulthood, and how when faced with unbelievable challenges demonstrate amazing resilience – stories of the good, the bad, and the successes. TOA wants to hear who or what made a difference in their lives and how it made the aging out transition easier. TOA is hoping to share how a caring mentor or an opportunity can make all the difference in someone’s life.

Trinity Opportunity Alliance is a non-profit organization based in Scottsdale working to connect young adults who have aged out of foster care with opportunities for employment. Trinity Opportunity Alliance does this work by partnering with employers and youth serving agencies to learn about employment opportunities, connect with youth, and to train employers on how to better work with this population. To date, they have connected over 150 youth with employment opportunities.
