Called Anew to Follow

When asked — “what drains your energy most in ministry?” — many respond — “Meetings!”

I would echo that, but also add to it — Meetings that do not lead to action and future and something new.

In the spring District Committee on Ministry meeting (which is an all-dayer!), I amazingly left feeling inspired and hope-filled.

Why? Because we heard story after story from ministry candidates about their call into ministry. When getting gloomy or down about the future of the UMC, or even in the Christian faith, I encourage you to talk with someone the Lord has been talking to. Inevitably, that conversation with God was about the future and vision of a new creation.

Here is a taste of what a few candidates shared. . .

“What gets me excited about ministry? Seeing someone realize that in their brokenness and mess of a life, they are loved — it’s grace — it’s God.”

“It is a beautiful privilege to guide someone in developing their walk with God and their discovering God has been with them on that constant journey of growth.”

“I love to see people move out of their seats and become a part of this great drama of worship and life in Christ.”

The candidates know full-well about the struggles, strains, and schisms in our United Methodist Church, yet they are excited to respond to the call of ministry in Christ. I think that is so, because when God puts a vision and call into your spirit, there is new life and hope.

Whether it is hearing a new call, or re-calling that time, perhaps long ago, when God’s prevenient grace inspired you to follow, may you have eyes to see the vision and ears to hear the call from God.

I am looking forward to the service of Ordination at our Annual Conference session. If you cannot be present in Mesa on June 15, view it on live stream. Find the link here — https://dscumc.org/annual-conference/
