May Apportionments Decline Again

by | Jun 4, 2019 | Apportionments

May’s apportionment receipts declined for the fourth consecutive month. For the first 5 months of 2019, our churches contributed 32.5% of their apportionments. As you can see from the detailed report, this was 2.7% below last year and 1.5% below our average apportionment contributions through May for the last ten years. At this rate, we project an overall year-end apportionment contribution percentage of only 79%- 83%. That would be the worst year by far in our conference’s history.

The West district showed a 0.6% improvement from last year, the South District declined 0.8%, the East District declined 3.8%, and the North District was down 8.1%. Our overall year-to-date apportionment contributions through 5/31/19 are shown in the following graph:

Based on the current projection for apportionment receipts, the Desert Southwest Conference Council on Finance & Administration has targeted payment of general church apportionments for 2019 at 80%. This is after payment at the 100% level for 1999-2007 and 2011-2018. CFA will reevaluate this target at its meetings in August and December, and they hope apportionment receipts will improve enough to again allow for full payment of general church apportionments by the end of 2019. CFA is also closely monitoring Conference cash reserves and will evaluate other possible budget reductions over the balance of the year should the need arise.

Remember that apportionments are a way to look beyond just ourselves. Please do all that you can to help our churches and our ministries continue to change lives by contributing apportionments as fully as possible in the last seven months of 2019. Thank you for your commitment; it truly provides financial stability for our connectional programs to work.
