In Memory of Rev. Phyllis Ayers Nelson

by | Dec 3, 2019 | Death Announcements

In sadness, we share the news that the Rev. Phyllis Ayers Nelson died on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

Rev. Nelson was a retired deacon in the Desert Southwest Conference. She was a graduate of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, was consecrated as a diaconal minister in 1992 and was ordained as a deacon in 1997. Her service in the Desert Southwest Conference included: Las Vegas: University UMC as the Minister of Christian Discipleship and Las Vegas: Desert Spring UMC. Rev. Nelson retired in 2004.

Rev. Nelson practiced extravagant hospitality before we had the name for it. Her ministry was one of creating community among strangers as she would gather anyone and everyone around the table of welcome and celebration. Music was also a part of Phyl’s ministry. Through the keyboard, she was able to bring any hymn to life — putting a swing and a jazz to it in a contemporaneous and extemporaneous way that filled the room and every heart with life, smiles, and joy in the Lord.

She is survived by her husband Roy Nelson, 4 children and 11 grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, December 7th, 2019 at 3:00 pm at Desert Spring UMC, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89144. Clergy are invited to join the processional and gather in the lobby. A reception will follow immediately after the service.

Condolences can be sent to:
