I came into the world as a prenatal Methodist. My parents met through Epworth League events (a 20’s-30’s Methodist youth/young adult ministry). I was born in Los Angeles, California, the oldest of three children (two younger sisters, both deceased). Our family had ties to Maynard Memorial Methodist Church and its successor, Culver Palms UMC, for sixty years. My education includes degrees from UCLA (BA Psychology) and Garrett Theological Seminary (M. Div.) I married Dianna Lee in August 1967. Yes, we recently celebrated/survived 53 years of marriage to the same person. My first full-time appointment was Parker, Arizona. During the next 41 years I served diverse rural, urban, and suburban congregations in Arizona, Southern California, and Southern Nevada. Every church was a place of significant learning, growth, and service.
Our three children Paul, David, and Karin, happened in the first three communities where we served—Parker, Claypool, and Eloy, AZ. All three currently live near us in Las Vegas, along with four of our five grandchildren. In retirement Dianna and I have served on UMCOR Early Response Teams, enjoyed singing with a quality church choir, and watched and celebrated the growth of our amazing grandchildren. My son Paul says I’m a poor example of how to retire. I took that step in 2011. But a few years later I returned to serve as interim pastor at Community Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Bullhead City, AZ from 2016-18. This summer I reinforced his argument by taking my current appointment at Journey UMC.
