By Rev. Javier Olivares, Chair of the Desert Southwest Conference Commission on Religion and Race

The Conference Commission on Religion and Race has been working on a document called Foundations for Cultural Competency and Cross-Cultural Cross-Racial Appointments. The Commission is looking into developing a strategy of this document to present it at the Annual Conference 2021. This strategy will help us implement a plan that will assist the cabinet, Conference leadership, local churches, and clergy/pastors to receive and engage in cultural competency awareness and training successfully. It will help facilitate and strengthen the cross-racial and cross-cultural appointments in the DSC.

To help us create this framework for Inclusion and Diversity in our Annual Conference, Dr. Grace Pak, a qualified expert on Inclusion and Diversity, will be the one helping us during this process. She worked for GCORR and is now a private consultant for Shalom I.D.E.A.

An Inclusion and Diversity task force has been created to work with Dr. Pak for these next months. The team consists of people who are in a key position of leadership or have a passion for cross-cultural cross-racial ministry. Please keep us in your prayers as we work together towards creating a framework for diversity and inclusion. The team members are:

Rev. Paul Cho
Rev. Dottie Escobedo-Frank
Rev. Stephen Govett
Pastor Sylvia Harris
Mrs. Julie O’Neal
Rev. Beth Rambikur
Rev. Melissa Rynders
Rev. Khalif Smith
Pastor Wendy A Swanson
Mrs. Maritza Velazquez
Ms. Regina Walker
Ms. Deborah Williams
Mr. Scott Whitmire
Rev. Efrain Zavala

Rev. Dan Morley
