disAbilities Awareness Sunday on October 17, 2022

By Howard G. Guetherman, disAbilities Representative to DSC Health & Caring Ministries

In the Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church, DisAbility Awareness Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of October. This year that is October 17.

The message for that Sunday should be about how we all are one in Christ, but some of us have a disAbility that prohibits us to do everything.

A Special Offering can be received to help our churches remove or correct barriers to folks who are disabled in any number of visible or invisible ways.

These funds can be used to change doorknobs to lever action for folks who cannot grab a knob or installing ramps to get into the buildings or choir loft, making signs with braille printing, replacing outdated drinking water fountains, etc. The funds collected are broken down to 25% staying at the local church as a designated fund item, 25% going to the Conference office for loans/grants to assist other local churches, and 50% going to the National DisAbility Ministry Advance #3021054 for distribution nationally.
