by | Feb 15, 2022 | Death Announcements

From the Office of Bishop Grant J. Hagiya

In sadness we share the news that The Rev. Roy Ludlow died on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

Rev. Roy Ludlow was a retired elder in the Desert Southwest Conference. Roy grew up in Oregon, the youngest of five children, and was baptized as a young child at Hillsboro Methodist Church. He was a college student when he was drafted into the Army. After a two-year term, he returned to Portland State College, where he earned his degree in Psychology. He married Betty Bloye in March 1961, two months before his college graduation. Roy started a new job in Portland and was soon transferred to Oregon City. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Teri, in 1962, Roy and Betty moved to Madison, NJ.

His experience working as a camp counselor in his earlier life influenced his decision to pursue the ministry. Roy began his studies at Drew University and served as a student pastor. He was admitted on trial in the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the Methodist Church in 1964 and was appointed to attend school and Betty and Roy’s son, Mark, was born in 1965. Later, Roy served at Rainier Methodist Church in 1967. In the Oregon-Idaho Conference of The United Methodist Church, he entered into full connection and served Rainier, Garden Home UMC in Portland in 1969. After graduation, the Ludlows returned to Oregon, where Roy began serving in the local church. After several years, Roy went back into the military, serving as a chaplain in the US Army, stationed in Vietnam, Germany, and several U.S. states, including Arizona. While stationed in California, Roy earned a Masters degree in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling; he also earned an Educational Specialist degree from Ball State University.

Roy and Betty returned to Arizona in 1988, and upon his retirement from the military, served as a prison chaplain at the Arizona State Corrections facility for 11 years, and then began a ministry as an on-call chaplain for Tucson Medical Center. He also provided counseling services at Desert Skies UMC. He transferred to the Desert Southwest Conference in 1995 and continued his service until his retirement in 2001. In 2010, Roy earned his Doctorate in Biblical Studies from Master’s International University. After four unsuccessful attempts, Roy finally retired for good in 2019. Roy was many things in his life: son, brother, teenager, young man, lifeguard, Christian, husband, father, minister, chaplain, grandfather, friend, mentor, and neighbor. He used to say that marrying his surviving spouse, Betty was his greatest accomplishment.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 5th at 11:30 am at Desert Skies UMC, 3255 N Houghton Rd., Tucson, AZ 85749-9561.  Clergy are invited to arrive early to robe up and participate in a processional.
