Grace and peace be with you all during this season of new life. It is my pleasure to share with you that I intend to appoint the Rev. Rachel Gilmore to fill the position of the Director of New and Vital Faith beginning on July 1, 2022 per paragraphs 346.1 and 344.1.a.1 in the 2016 United Methodist Book of Discipline. Rev. Gilmore currently serves as the Missional Consultant at Central United Methodist Church.
Rev. Gilmore is uniquely qualified to step into the Developer’s position. She most recently served as the Director of Recruiting, Training and Assessing for lay and clergy church planters at Path 1 -The United Methodist Church. Rachel and her husband, the Rev. Brandon Gilmore, are pastors at Central United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Arizona where they are creating a new faith community while revitalizing the existing congregation.
In 2009, Rachel planted a church in Virginia Beach and started two missional preschools. In 2017 she cultivated fresh expressions in the local jail and in a feeding ministry which provided food to over 40,000 people in 2020. Rachel graduated magna cum laude from Duke Divinity School as a Distinguished Leader after serving for two years in the Peace Corps in Bulgaria. She is the author of “Expanding the Expedition Reach with Missional Communities” and is a contributor to “Launching a New Worship Community: a Practical Guide for the 2020s” (Upper Room, 2021). Her story is also featured in Ready, Set, Plant (Upper Room, 2021) and From Franchise to Local Dive: Multiplying your Church by Developing your Contextual Flavor (Marketsquare, 2020).
Shortly after Rachel’s arrival in our Conference she began to make connections and develop strong relationships. Her spirit and joy about creating new life in our churches is evident in all that Rachel does.
I am excited for the possibilities Rachel brings to the position of Director of New and Vital Faith and ask that you join me in prayer as we welcome her as part of the Desert Southwest Conference staff.
Be the Change,
Bishop Grant J. Hagiya
