Statement From the Gun Violence Awareness Task Force

by | May 25, 2022 | Gun Violence Awareness, Featured-News

By Geraldine Hills, Chair of the Desert Southwest Conference Board of Church. & Society, Gun Violence Awareness Task Force

Once again, the country is horrified and traumatized by the mass murder of school children. This time it was Uvalde, Texas. This slaughter is far too predictable in America. Last week it was a hate-fueled shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY. Our hearts go out to the families, staff, and entire community of Uvalde. We pray for them and all impacted by gun violence who have been triggered by this news.

But prayers are not enough. Today’s massacre re-enforces the urgent need for our leaders to take comprehensive action – now! As United Methodists, our Book of Resolutions reminds us of Jesus’ call to be peacemakers. (Matthew 5:9). It charges us to address gun violence in our communities. We need community-based violence intervention programs and clear strong public policy. We do not have to accept gun violence as part of American culture.

To get involved with the Gun Violence Awareness Task Force, please contact Billie Fidlin, Director of Outreach Ministries, at bfidlin@dscumc.org.

Join us for a Candlelight Vigil, & Call To Action – Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at 6:30 PM at the Arizona State Capital.
