Since 1990, the Desert Southwest Conference adopted a resolution to raise awareness and advocacy for persons with disAbilities. The resolution called to designate the third Sunday in October of each year as Disability Awareness and Advocacy Sunday in the Desert Southwest Conference. The resolution also asks that all United Methodist members be challenged to engage in careful thought, intentional prayer, and loving action to overcome as many barriers, both architectural and attitudinal, to handicapped people as possible within the body of Christ and the secular community.

The following resources are available for that intention.

A special offering can be received to help our churches remove or correct barriers to folks who are disabled in any number of visible or invisible ways.

These funds can be used to change doorknobs to lever action for folks who cannot grab a knob or installing ramps to get into the buildings or choir loft, making signs with braille printing, replacing outdated drinking water fountains, etc. The funds collected are broken down to 25% staying at the local church as a designated fund item, 25% going to the Conference office for loans/grants to assist other local churches, and 50% going to the National DisAbility Ministry Advance #3021054 for distribution nationally.
