HIV Caring Ministries – Meeting Notes

by | Aug 9, 2022 | HIV Caring Ministry, MEETING MINUTES

Attendance: Linda Girard, Mary Bullis, Bill B., Gregory Wagner, Billie Fidlin

Linda opened the meeting in prayer.

Quarterly Dinners

Most recent dinner was in July. Participation is semi-low but those who come value gathering together; new people really like the time together. Discussion: attendance has been dwindling for a while – could be COVID. Weighing the amount of work vs the value – the team was mixed on their feelings. Bill doesn’t think it’s COVID – he hears other reasons. Cost is almost $1,000 per. Year – though the food does get eaten even when the team has prepared for greater numbers. The team decided to go to twice a year. Next dinner will be in early March before SFTJ, outside. People bringing friends to these meals can help increase SFTJ attendance. Emphasis will be on Strength for the Journey. November dinner will be canceled with the attendees.

SFTJ (Strength for the Journey)

Registration will be open October 1st. Was advertised in the last quarterly letter in July. Campers have been encouraged to save monthly for the camp cost. As some organizations are still abiding by strict protocol and not meeting – is affecting registration numbers.

We do track inventory in terms of what is used vs not at camp and amend purchases accordingly.

Rodeo (President’s Day Weekend; February 18 & 19, 2023)

We need between 50 -70 volunteers. We need to partner more with Conference teams such as Welcoming/Affirming/ Reconciling Ministries. Other teams may want to participate as well. Also, members at our reconciling churches. Need to schedule another fundraising committee. We should add Pastor Deontez Wimbley (Crossroads UMC) to fundraising committee. Mary will ask him today.

Bill will revise the budget to three columns and send to the team. Mary will be asking Anne Green from the Foundation for support.

Phoenix AIDS Walk – March 25th Tempe Beach Park

(from Aunt Rita’s website)

While we didn’t participate last year, we do want to participate this year. Bill will meet with the director and find out the details. Likely a booth similar to PRIDE. Definite outreach opportunity for SFTJ etc.  Regarding communion:  If we want to hold communion it will likely be welcomed.

PRIDE Phoenix is October 15,16. At this time we are not going to do a booth this year due to funding – unless we get the funding. There is still time to register. Regarding Las Vegas PRIDE – October 8th – Govetts have helped in the past in general around PRIDE, which would be the best way to reach people, especially for SFTJ. App is confusing – Bill will call them. Las Vegas would take 3 shifts of volunteers. Would be great to share the booth with Welcome, Affirming, Reconciling Ministries. Mary will also ask them about Vegas PRIDE. Chuck in Vegas could help with PRIDE and recruiting folks for SFTJ.

TEAM Membership

Linda will ask Deontez’s husband to join Gerald Nunessn & Kim Riddlesworth. Mary will ask Govetts for recommendations.

Something New!

There is no support group for HIV people in Phoenix now. Bill had reached out to Aunt Rita’s but a meeting hasn’t occurred.

Perhaps we could partner up with them to do a support group. Something to explore.

NEXT MEETING: OCTOBER 4th at 9:00 am
