BSA Update

The new agreement between the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America has been completed! Unfortunately, one of the changes is that churches are no longer permitted to continue as chartering organizations for troops. Effective October 31, 2022, all Charter Agreements must be replaced by the new Affiliation Agreement.

To terminate the chartering relationship with your troop, you will need to fill out and sign the local church’s portion of the BSA Unit Charter Release-Assumption Form (linked below) no later than Oct. 31st, 2022. . Please keep a signed copy for the church’s records.

The good news is that there is still a way for a church to continue its relationship with the BSA. The troop will need to secure a new chartering organization. The local church may then sign the attached Facilities Use and Indemnity Agreement to allow the troop to continue meeting at the church. The new chartering organization will take on the legal responsibilities described by the chartering agreement, and the church can continue to support the troop in many of the ways we are accustomed.

Once you’ve terminated the charter, the troop may only continue meeting at the church when all parties have signed the completed Facilities Use and Indemnity Agreement. Please do not use any other Facility Use Agreement as it will not contain the necessary legal language to protect the church.
