Zion United Methodist Church’s burned sanctuary is cleared, stoking a new fire of anticipation for what is to come for the community’s good and the world’s transformation.
In 2017, a fire took hold of one of the church’s buildings. Still, despite what passersby imagined, the fire did nothing to stop the ministry that was already cultivating on the church campus at 2108 Revere St, North Las Vegas. Many believed the church had closed after the fire because the burned building remained standing. While the pandemic delayed clearing the burnt building, Zion United Methodist Church, in partnership with Energy Tree, focused on implementing urban agriculture that is the way of the future. Utilizing high-tech resources with minimal burden on natural resources, Zion United Methodist Church is the home of a renowned community garden – an oasis in the desert.
At Zion, people can learn from a master gardener, rent a garden bed, help grow produce, or pick up a bountiful harvest year-round for a donation. With orchards, grape vines, and numerous garden beds, Zion United Methodist Church feeds the hungry with fresh produce and teaches classes on preparing the food. Visitors will find Pastor Linda Stanley is a strong and kind soul with a passion for teaching the scriptures. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)
This historically black church is known for producing extraordinary leaders that have impacted society in powerful ways. Today, it is also teaching people about renewal through transforming a desert into life-giving soil and through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Zion United Methodist Church has cleared away the burnt building and cleared a path to something new. As the church researches the community’s needs, they seek to hear from the people and foster new leaders as they discover what’s next in God’s plan.
