by | Oct 27, 2022 | East District Newsletter

ASU professor, former United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization deputy director, offers a global perspective on water and food insecurity

The public is invited to attend a talk and discussion on Global Food and Water Insecurity featuring Dr. Olcay Unver at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, 4455 E. Lincoln Dr., Monday, Nov. 7, 6:30–8 p.m. This program will focus on developing countries around the world and how climate change – either extreme droughts or floods – is disproportionately affecting the poor.

Our speaker, Dr. Unver, joined Arizona State University in 2020 as a Professor of Practice in Environmental and Resource Management. Dr. Unver is an internationally known expert in water policy, natural resource governance and management, sustainable development and food security. He has been featured in The New York Times for heading successful efforts to restore the Fertile Crescent, and in 1999 Time magazine named him as one of “19 European Visionaries.” Dr. Unver served as Deputy Director of the Land and Water Division of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the United Nations, Vice Chair of UN Water, and was one of the authors of SDG 6 (Sustainable Development Goals), which pledges to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Admission to the Nov. 7 program is free, and light refreshments will be served. A live stream option is also available. For more information or to register, visit pvumc.org/events or call 602-840-8360.
