From the Office of Bishop Carlo A. Rapanut

In sadness, we share the news that Rev. Roger Smith, a retired elder in the Desert Southwest Conference, died on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.

Rev. Smith was born in Saint Clair, Michigan in 1938 and permanently relocated to Arizona in 1980. His deep devotion to serving God through the work of The United Methodist Church was fully realized when he became a local pastor in the late 1980s and served at Somerton and Gila Mountain UM (then) Fellowship and (later) UM Church. Rev. Smith was ordained a deacon and received as an associate member in 1992 and continued serving at Gila Mountain UMC, at Parker UMC in Parker, AZ (1994) and finally at Ajo Federated Church in Ajo, AZ (1999). He retired in 2009.

Rev. Smith enjoyed camping, spending time with extended family, cooking, pampering pets, and hands-on projects involving yard work and crafts. He is survived by his daughter, Rev. Katie Fuchs and her husband, three grandchildren and multiple generations of nieces and nephews.
