From the Office of Bishop Carlo A. Rapanut

CORRECTION: Rev. Munchinsky’s first name is Miloslav. Our apologies for this error.

In sadness, we share the news that Rev. Miloslav “Mel” Munchinsky, a retired elder in the Desert Southwest Conference, died on Friday, December 15, 2023.

Rev. Munchinsky grew up in rural Saskatchewan on the family farm. After attending the University of Saskatchewan, he joined the Canadian civil service in hopes of becoming a foreign service officer. Life eventually took him in a different direction, and he attended Asbury Theological Seminary and finished two graduate degrees in 1976. He served at Duncan UMC in Duncan, AZ as a member of the Wesleyan Church of Canada (1985-1986). He was admitted on probation (1987) and continued serving at Duncan UMC. He then served at Grace UMC in Phoenix, AZ (1988) and later at South Mountain Community Church in Phoenix, AZ (1990). He was admitted as an elder in full connection (1992) and began an appointment at Aldersgate UMC in Phoenix that same year. He added an appointment to Albright UMC (1996) but returned to a single appointment at Aldersgate (1997). Following his time at Aldersgate, Rev. Munchinsky served as an associate pastor at Trinity UMC in Phoenix (1998) and then moved to Payson, AZ where he began an appointment at Payson UMC (2000). He returned to the Phoenix metro area to serve at First UMC in Mesa, AZ (2005), Cross in the Desert UMC in Phoenix, AZ (2008) and at Velda Rose UMC in Mesa, AZ (2013). Rev. Munchinsky retired in 2015. While in retirement, he served as an interim pastor at First UMC in Mesa, AZ (2018) and then returned to retirement (2019).

Rev. Munchinsky was a faithful servant who served local churches and also served on the General Board of Global Ministries where he felt that he was serving as a foreign service officer in a different way. What he loved most of all was spending quality time with people, especially his seven grandchildren, becoming a professional grandpa when he finally retired. Rev. Munchinsky is survived by three children, seven grandchildren and two siblings.
