Recently GM announced a major shift in corporate strategy; the automaker plans to go all electric, phasing out production of gasoline-powered automobiles by 2035. Even in the last few years the company was advocating for environmental regulations to be relaxed, but GM’s leadership believes that electric vehicles are the future, and they want to be ahead of the curve. We’ve been in our new house for a month now, and no matter where we look, my wife Felida and I can’t find our silverware. Losing something you need or value is a hazard of moving. One year when we moved from Sedona to Tucson, the movers packed our printer in the wrong box and we couldn’t find it for six months. And this time it’s the silverware; for three weeks we used plastic forks, knives and spoons at every meal until my wife gave in and bought a cheap set of tableware from the dollar store. If we’re lucky, we’ll find what we’ve lost before we move from this house again.
My wife Felida and I were officially homeless for almost four months in 2020, from Aug. 24th when we sold our home in Sierra Vista to Dec. 14th when we got the keys to our new home in Vail southeast of Tucson. Because we’re blessed to have a steady income and supportive family, our ‘homelessness’ was a much different and easier experience for us than it is for many people – a walk in the park, really. Three vacation rentals and several visits to my wife’s parents later, we are once again homeowners.
And as a sign that God was with them, Isaiah spoke of a sign, a symbol of hope, an assurance of God’s promise that God is always with us, even when things are awful or scary. That sign, that symbol, was the birth of a child. Someone was pregnant, and with the birth of her child, hope would come anew into the world.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. We saw the signs back in October, when the stores started displaying their holiday wares and a few cable channels started airing endless Christmas movies. And now, in this strange season of Covid19, it’s suddenly also Advent Season.
