The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church is petitioning the denomination’s top court for clarification on its recent decision regarding the General Conference that will be held in 2024.
The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church is welcoming thirteen (13) bishops who were elected during last week’s jurisdictional conferences in the United States.
Bishop Grant Hagiya, who leads the California-Pacific and Desert Southwest conferences, said orientation would include discussions of the denomination’s global nature, an overview of legal matters facing the denomination and guidance for running annual conference meetings. New bishops also will receive training on combatting sexism and racism. Hagiya emphasized that the orientation sessions would include worship and prayer.
The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church ended its summer 2022 meeting last Friday (Aug.26) with a call to act against gun violence and to create a uniform approach to the way in which bishops would deal with the process of disaffiliation in their areas.
In its ruling (Decision 1449) released on Tuesday, the church’s high court said, “the process in ¶ 2548.2 may not be used as a pathway for local churches to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church.”
