Over the next few months, I will share what I can about the state of The United Methodist Church, and I realize that I will not have many answers. The truth of the matter is no one knows what will happen next, and this fact should sober all of us.
As we prepare for the appointment year in 2022, the Cabinet has agreed upon a practice that I have been using for almost my entire episcopal career.
October is designated as “Clergy Appreciation Month.” Since “Clergy Appreciation Month” is a one-and-done type of event, my suggestion is that we extend this until the end of the year.
The direct effect that the global pandemic has had on our United Methodist Church is what has brought me to be in relationship with all of you. I will continue to serve both the California-Pacific Conference and the Desert Southwest Conference during this interim period.
The UMC is currently the largest faith community of chartering organizations serving the Boy Scouts of America program, and many of our churches in the DSC have scouting ministries. This letter shares important information as well as guidance and direction for the congregations of the DSC.
Generally, in our culture of rugged individualism, one often thinks and acts in terms of “What is best for me?” Paul encourages us to look beyond self to others: “What is good for all?” Now, the safety of many is in our hands.
As we enter into a time of episcopal transition, I want to assure the Desert Southwest Conference that the plan of coverage has been approved by the Council of Bishops.
