I wish my mom were here so I could ask questions that I never thought about while she was alive. I do remember a few of the stories she told me about the depression, but today I wish I had listened better.
An abbreviation for Reflection, Action, Courageous Dialogue, and Engagement, the DSC RACE Coalition actively works to promote racially-focused education and dialogue within the DSC, as well as eliminate all forms of racism within the conference. It is easy to write an angry post decrying racism but walking in the waters of our baptism is not that easy. It starts with a deep sense of growing in personal holiness –listening, self-reflection, learning, battling the tendency toward denial before moving into confession and true repentance. Social justice is the outward manifestation of personal piety. And it is experienced in the choices you make each and every day.
The murder of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and the hate crime causing George Floyd’s horrific death have brought our nation and our church to a tipping place. The Appointive Cabinet denounces the sin of systemic racism and commits to taking action to end a culture of white privilege in our society and in our church.
I have struggled to find the words to express how I have been feeling. George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. So many others. I am horrified at how God’s people are treated because of the color of their skin.
