Class Leader Rev. Linda De Atley

Welcome to Aging and Ministry in the 21st Century! Before we begin, I want to share a little information about myself. I grew up in a small multi-generational family. We did everything together – moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandmothers and cousins! We feasted at holidays, played cards and laughed together at the dining room table, cooked together, shared family news, and cared for each other, especially our aging grandmothers. When I entered graduate studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, I decided to specialize in counseling practices supporting older adults and family members. My M.A. in Counseling was followed by a Ph. D. in Counseling. My doctoral dissertation was designed to evaluate the factors that created positive perceptions of old age and old people. It was funded by the Administration on Aging in Washington, D.C. During my doctoral work I co-authored a monographed published by the State of Missouri entitled, “Active & Alert: Learning Experiences for Older Adults” which was to be used by directors of senior centers as guidance in creating learning experiences for senior adults. However, due to a lack of other published material on the subject, it was consumed beyond the senior centers to educate social workers and nurses in their courses of study.

Post-doctoral work would normally have been followed with clinical work, but my husband’s work moved us to Phoenix, Arizona, where I applied for the position of Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Greater Maricopa County which at that time was part of the Foundation for Senior Adults. I wanted to put my doctoral dissertation to work in a division of an organization committed to maintaining and supporting active lives and independent living for senior adults. During my years with RSVP, the program won a 12 Who Care Award lifting up the value of senior adults in communities across Maricopa County.  Before I left the Foundation for Senior Living, I created the Arizona Heritage Fair which I administered for six years. Its purpose was to recognize the vast and lasting contribution senior adults make in families by teaching cultural traditions to younger generations. Older adults make a tremendous impact on younger generations, and I believed then and now that it is time for us to recognize their value as carriers of culture, values and faith.

In 1992, I responded to a twenty-three year old call to ordained ministry and began seminary studies at Claremont School of Theology. Over twenty-five years of ordained ministry, I have served two United Methodist Churches, both in Sun City, Arizona. My goal from childhood to care for older family members, support independent living, enrich the lives of senior adults through studies and encourage them to share their wisdom, leadership and experience remains as strong as ever! Please join me as we explore together the value, importance and means to enrich their lives and incorporate their wisdom and leadership into the lives of our churches today!
