January 21 - January 23
The Gathering is the annual gathering of appointed and retired pastors in the Desert Southwest Conference. It is for ALL appointed pastors: elders, deacons, provisional elders and deacons, local pastors, laypersons assigned, retired pastors, and everyone who doesn’t fit into any of those categories but who serve our churches in our conference are invited! Those ordained are expected to attend.
The Gathering will be held on January 21-23, 2020, at Picture Rocks, Redemptorist Renewal Center in Tucson, Arizona. We will begin Tuesday after lunch, at 2:00 PM. We will end with worship and lunch on Thursday.
We are required by The Discipline to attend a boundaries training every four years, and this is it for our Desert Southwest Conference! If you miss The Gathering, you will be required to attend an approved boundaries training on your own time and expense.
Registration is now live online
Registration will close on January 7. You do NOT need to pay when you register. If you want to pay for it in next year’s Continuing Education budget at your church, then select the “pay by check” option when you register and send in a check in the new year.
You don’t want to miss The Gathering 2020! Becky Posey Williams, the Senior Director for Sexual Ethics and Advocacy for the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women will be with us to present a boundaries training (see below). Becky will be enjoying the warmer climate of Tucson for a few days, thawing out from her home-town of Chicago. In addition, we are welcoming Rev. Jane Voights as our Joy Consultant for the event. Joining us from southern California, Jane is a UMC pastor who got her start as an improvisational stand up comedian in Chicago (see a connection here?). She will bring a little levity and joy to our time together. Bishop Bob Hoshibata will round out our trinity of guests in his last appearance at a Gathering as our resident Bishop. Mark your calendar. Sign up now. Don’t miss this 48 hours! (Because, again, your DS will make you make it up if you do!
“Integrity in Ministry: Boundaries and the Importance of Self-Care”
Healthy boundaries sustain all of our relationships and bring joy to ministry. Understanding boundaries in the multiple ministry roles is crucial for a healthy and safe faith community. This training will address the awareness of power and vulnerability in ministerial relationships and explore dual relationships and the challenges they present within the Church as well as through social media. We will consider the ministry setting, including but not limited to rural, urban, full time, and part time. Emphasis will be placed on the violation of boundaries which result in the chargeable offense of sexual misconduct. Participants will be encouraged to be in dialogue with colleagues at their tables about specific boundary challenges and develop individual plans of self-care which reflect their lives, spiritually, emotionally, socially, and physically.
