As I plan with Emily Jones, our retreat leader, I am excited. Emily will be leading us through scripture as we explore the stories of Esther and Rachael and discover the source of our faith, hope and courage. We will investigate how the way of Jesus shapes what we do. There will be activities for spiritual practice as well as free time to enjoy the surroundings as you walk the labyrinth, look at the petroglyphs or appreciate the Stations of the Cross trail. Spend time with your friends, new and old, playing games or enjoying a sing along around the piano.
Emily and I have visited about the ladies of Desert Southwest Conference so she can get to know you a little before she joins us and as she has listened to me, she is developing a wonderful plan for leading us in Spiritual Retreat.
Our goals for the weekend will be:
—- Refresh and reconnect with God.
—- Cultivate spiritual practices to sustain and deepen our racial justice work.
—- Deepen our relationships with each other across lines of difference.
—- Explore the texts of Scripture and the work of key spiritual growth writers, applying them to our own context.
—- Develop a shared understanding of key elements of United Methodist Women’s racial justice engagement, including: (1) building common definitions for core concepts and Biblical foundations; (2) the Charter for Racial Justice and the history of United Methodist Women’s work; and (3) and the current campaign to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.
Jesus frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray (Luke 5:16). I am looking forward to getting away to the peacefulness and beauty of this desert retreat. Please join me!
